GoGuardian filters and monitors school-issued devices for a reported 27 million students in 11,500 schools, and its Beacon product flags students it considers at risk of self-harm. A 2023 EFF investigation found it routinely flagged harmless pages (college sites, counseling resources, LGBTQ+ history, the Holocaust, Black authors) and showed administrators students' search histories. EFF also said the tool collects location data and live screen views, which can add up to detailed profiles of children. Until 2015 the software could log keystrokes and switch on webcams remotely. No regulator or court has acted against GoGuardian (none verified), so the risk is structural: schools adopt it, and students and parents have no way to opt out.
