Google's school products put a large share of K-12 students into Google accounts, and the main dispute is over where the education suite ends and consumer Google begins. Google's education privacy notice promises no ads and no ad use of data in 'Core Services' (Classroom, Gmail, Drive and similar), but school accounts can also reach 'Additional Services' such as Search, YouTube and Maps, which run under Google's general privacy policy and can show K-12 users non-personalized ads. New Mexico's AG sued in 2020, alleging Chromebooks and G Suite for Education collected under-13 students' location, browsing, YouTube and voice data without parental consent. That suit and a companion case settled in Dec. 2021 with a $3.8M children's-privacy initiative and no finding that Google broke COPPA. In 2024 Denmark's data protection authority ordered 53 municipalities to stop sending student data to Google for purposes such as product improvement.
