Meta AI's Discover feed turned a share button into a publishing button: users' conversations about tax evasion, medical conditions, child custody, grief and financial distress appeared in a public feed, in many cases with their username and profile photo still attached. Meta's defense is that publishing required a deliberate multistep action - which is precisely the point, because thousands of people plainly did not understand what the button did. Then in October 2025 Meta announced that, effective December 16, 2025, people's interactions with Meta AI would feed content and ad personalization across its apps - an early instance of active AI conversations becoming an advertising signal at scale - with no dedicated opt-out described in Meta's announcement; Meta said the change applied in 'most regions', and press reports said the EU, UK and South Korea were excluded. Meta AI conversations inside WhatsApp are not covered by end-to-end encryption.

Under the policy update Meta announced Oct. 1, 2025 and put into effect Dec. 16, 2025, AI chat interactions feed ad and content personalization across Meta accounts linked in the same Accounts Center (Facebook and Instagram; WhatsApp AI chats only if the WhatsApp account is added to Accounts Center) - an early instance of active AI conversations, not just browsing and behavioral signals, becoming an ad-targeting input at scale. Linking accounts means an AI chat in one app can shape ads in another. Meta states chats about religion, health, politics or sexual orientation are excluded from ad targeting, though they may still be stored and used internally for product improvement. Meta's announcement describes no opt-out (only ad-preference and feed controls); press reports state the EU, UK and South Korea were excluded from the rollout, while Meta's own post says only that it is rolling out 'in most regions'. Meta AI conversations on WhatsApp are NOT end-to-end encrypted and may be used for training.
